Prada Miu Miu – Miuccia Prada’s for The Great Gatsby

prada-the-great-gatsby-20.jpeg-580170_0x440Forty exclusive cocktail and evening gowns by Prada and Miu Miu: skilfully directed by Baz Luhrmann, the film adaptation of Francis
Scott Fitzgerald’s The Great Gatsby has all the makings of being a real gem not just for the lovers of literature and cinema but
also for also for those with a special love for fashion.

Miuccia Prada has joined forces with Baz Luhrmann – the director of Moulin Rouge and Romeo+Juliet – and the legendary costume
designer Catherine Martin to create a collection of specially designed garments inspired by the creations of Miuccia Prada from the
archives of the last 20 years. The Jazz Age, and the lavish and legendary parties hosted by Mr. Gatsby will be re-enacted also from
an aesthetic point of view thanks to the contribution of one of the greatest Italian designer.

“Baz and Miuccia have always connected on their shared fascination with finding modern ways of releasing classic and historical
references from the shackles of the past – explained Catherine Martin – This connection is central to our relationship with Miuccia
Prada on The Great Gatsby, and has connected our vision with hers. In the same way Nick Carraway reflects on a world that he is
within and without, we have tried to create an environment that the audience will be subconsciously familiar with, yet separated
from”.

We thought we couldn’t get any more excited about the Great Gatsby and then four of Miuccia Prada’s sketches landed on our desks. Yep, we’re now ready to burst. The designer collaborated with Baz Luhrmann and costume designer Catherine Martin to create 40 cocktail and evening dresses which are all adapted from past Miu Miu and Prada collections.

Miuccia was inspired by her runways looks from the last 20 years – with plenty of fur collars and beaded dresses like we predicted back when we first heard that she was on board the GG team. So now onto the important stuff… how many sequins will we be seeing when the film comes out in May? The sketches include a blue multi-striped sequins dress with a plastic and trimmings embroidery at the bottom, which was inspired by the Prada Spring/Summer 2011 collection.

Released in cinemas in the US in May, the movie stars Leonardo Di Caprio, Tobey Maguire and Carey Mulligan who, in the role of
Daisy Carraway, sports one of the key pieces of the movie – a gold Prada evening gown covered with crystals.

The Great Gatsby

We love the drawing of the green gown with the bustier with pearls, stones and sequin fringe – a look we’ve not seen before in any of the promos. This design was inspired by a silhouette of the 1920s and was made using contemporary fabric and embroideries of the 50s. The knock-out design has to be the fish-scale like sequin embroidery dress in bright orange, which was inspired by the Prada Fall 2011 Collection.

It’s hardly suprising that Miuccia worked on the Great Gatsby as she has a long-standing friendship with Luhrmann and they worked on Romeo & Juliet together and a series of short films that were featured in the Met’s ‘Schiaparelli and Prada: Impossible Conversations’ exhibit. But Carey Mulligan is also a Miuccia’s muse as she has a Prada and Miu Miu red carpet uniform and she also wore a Prada dress at her wedding to Marcus Mumford.

Catherine Martin the costume designer said of working with the designer: ‘Baz and Miuccia have always connected on their shared fascination with finding modern ways of releasing classic and historical references from the shackles of the past. This connection is central to our relationship with Miuccia Prada on The Great Gatsby, and has connected our vision with hers. In the same way Nick Carraway reflects on a world that he is within and without, we have tried to create an environment that the audience will be subconsciously familiar with, yet separated from.’

Take a look at the four sketches and some of the looks from The Great Gatsby in the gallery above. Now we just have to wait to see the other 36…
